Occasionally they will have additional facilities such as a pool or restaurant. It's worth noting that facilities at some of the island hotels are less sophisticated than in the city, with electricity and hot water availability being limited at times. This could be due to restrictions in the mains supply.
On day 2, we take the sleeper train to Trang. We've graded the overnight train as simple and facilities are basic. We travel in second-class A/C sleepers, which feature two fold-down, bunk-style beds with privacy curtains. There are toilets available at either end of the carriage. This offers a sustainable way to travel and expereince the way the local do.
In Koh Lanta, we are staying in a beachfront hotel, giving you easy access to the beach and all the amenities you need. It is only a short distance from the town centre, and tuk-tuks are readily available and inexpensive to take you there. Due to high demand on the island, the hotel on Koh Lanta may feel slightly less modern than some other properties you might experience in Thailand, but the convenience of being right on the sandy beach more than makes up for it.
In Koh Yao Noi, we are staying in a guesthouse located in a coconut farm, facilities might be a bit more basic than in a traditional hotel however it allows you to give a different experience and support a locally owned business and meet the locals.- Please note this is only applicable to 2026 departures.
Suitability
Is this the trip for you?
- We've graded our tour of Thailand as relaxed. This itinerary balances the highlights with plenty of time to relax or explore solo.
- When it comes to dining, Thailand is a foodie haven. Our tour leader will point out the best spots to eat, but for the most part, meals aren't planned into our itinerary - this is a great way to mingle with locals and find some hidden gems.
- Thai cuisine caters to all diets and focuses on fresh, punchy flavours. Vegans should be aware that most dishes use shrimp paste or fish sauce.
- Bangkok's temples are a true highlight of the city. If you plan to visit them, dress appropriately. Make sure your shoulders are covered and trousers or skirts go past your knee. We also recommend a light scarf for covering your shoulders and arms during hot weather.
- We spend one night on a simple overnight train. Facilities are basic but perfectly comfortable for a one-night journey.
- One thing to know about Thailand is there is always a chance of rain! We recommend packing a light rain jacket to carry with you.
- Please note that we need your passport details at time of booking in order to book the overnight train tickets. Failure to provide these details may incur additional cost and the need to take the overnight bus instead.
