During this trip, in Sri Lanka we stay in comfortable hotels throughout. Our accommodation has been chosen based on comfort, location, and authenticity but it should be noted that standards may differ from home.
For the most part, our accommodation offers en-suite rooms with standard facilities like air-conditioning and WiFi. Some hotels have swimming pools to cool off in after a day's adventuring, and some also have a restaurant or bar. In the smaller properties, hot water isn't always available 24 hours a day, and with a group staying you might find if you're showering last, you may miss out on the hottest water.
In the Maldives, we stay aboard a five-berth Dhoni. We work with a local operator who owns a number of different Dhonis (all of which are different sizes with different layouts). While some of the boats still have sails, these aren't used frequently, and we use a Dhoni with a diesel energy.
Please note that a single room is not bookable on the Maldives boat trip due to the small size of the boat with only 5 cabins. If the departure is not full and there are spare cabins you might find that other single travellers, booked on a twin share basis, may be allocated on default a single cabin without paying the additional supplement cost but there are zero guarantees on this.
The five cabins are small and simple but adequate for sleeping and changing. Each cabin has bunk beds so the person on the top will need to be prepared to climb up to their bed. Two of the cabins have slightly wider (4.1ft) lower bunk beds and where possible we'll allocate these to couples, but we cannot guarantee this - couples should state their preference when booking. Four cabins have an ensuite bathroom with WC and shower. The other cabin is assigned a bathroom with a WC and shower that is not ensuite. The water is not heated and will flow at ambient temperature. There are plugs in each cabin with electricity available when the boat's generator is running (while the boat is moving, or the crew are cooking - usually between 2pm and 9am) so it's possible to charge cameras and phones during the tour. You may want to bring some earplugs if you are a light sleeper. There is no A/C but there is a fan in each cabin. There are small cupboards in each cabin for you to store valuables such as passports. There is no WiFi onboard, but it is possible to buy a SIM card from the airport or speak with your tour leader for advice on this while you have time in Male. There is a sun deck and loungers or comfortable mats to lie on. You are welcome to bring your pillow and sheets from your cabin if you wanted to try sleeping on deck under the stars.
It is prohibited to bring alcohol into the Maldives. There will be a bar on board selling bottles of wines and bottle of spirits as well as beers. The bill is only payable by USD Dollars or by Credit Card (with a 5% surcharge to cover local bank charges, in addition to anything levied by your bank card provider for paying in Dollars). Local currency cannot be used to settle the bill.
Whilst we do our best to deliver the advertised itinerary, the safe operation of the boat and all passengers is the crew's priority and as such, deviations from the planned itinerary may be necessary due to weather/local conditions.
All Dhonis are inspected annually in order to retain their license. They carry enough lifejackets for all clients and crew plus buoyancy aids and a dinghy with a small outboard engine. All boats have a CB radio, and for most of the voyage, the boat is in mobile phone range of the islands. Full firefighting equipment is also carried on every boat. There will be a minimum of 4 crew on board including the captain and cook - depending on the number of people on the boat.
Suitability
Is this the trip for you?
We've graded this tour as moderate, and we'll be moving along a lot to pack in Sri Lanka's highlights. Expect a busy itinerary with some long days, balanced with some downtime to explore at your own pace or relax.
Our itinerary includes some long drives but our time on the road gives us the opportunity to witness Sri Lanka's stunning scenery.
It can get incredibly hot and humid in Sri Lanka - we recommend packing light layers and carrying water at all times. During this tour, we stay in mainly comfortable accommodation. Our accommodation is chosen with comfort, location and authenticity in mind but it's worth noting that standards might differ from those at home.
The final ascent of Lion Rock is quite steep, on steel staircases and might be challenging for those who suffer badly from vertigo. The staircase has handrails on either side to hold on to as you go, and our tour leader will be on hand to support you. It is possible to opt out of this final section as the path comes back the same way.
There isn't a culture of eating out in Sri Lanka and so restaurants are few and far between. We'll eat out at local restaurants wherever possible but for most nights the hotel restaurants will be the only option available.
Sri Lankan cuisine is delicious and can cater to most dietary requirements. If you require a special diet, please inform us ahead of time.
Our time in the Maldives is spent living aboard a traditional dhoni. Cabins are compact but comfortable - we recommend travelling with soft-shell luggage as storage space may be limited. You also have the choice to spend some nights sleeping up on deck beneath the stars.
Please note that a single room is not bookable on the Maldives boat trip due to the small size of the boat with only 5 cabins.
You'll be required to climb on and off the boat using the ladder, as well as your bunk in the cabins if applicable. We'll take every opportunity to get into the water - you'll get the most out of this tour if you enjoy the water and are a proficient swimmer. You should be confident in the water as snorkelling is not from the shallows. We snorkel from the boat at sea on reefs surrounding the islands, sometimes using the smaller launch vessel to access shallower waters, with the depth and vastness of the ocean around us, and are therefore often exposed to currents with the boat and crew on hand to help. The smaller launch or zodiac does not have a ladder.
Onboard the dhoni, electricity will only be available when the generator is running (while the boat is moving, or the crew are cooking - usually between 2pm and 9am). While this will be adequate to keep your essentials charged, you might like to bring a power bank too.
It's also worth noting that there's no WiFi onboard the dhoni - you might like to treat this time as a digital detox or, alternatively, you can buy a local SIM card before boarding in Male.
While we try to stick to our scheduled itinerary, it's worth noting that, while in the Maldives, our captain might need to alter or adapt the daily itinerary due to weather/local conditions.
On the dhoni, all meals are included and prepared by a private chef. Again, you must inform us ahead of time of any specific dietary requirements.
It's worth noting that the Maldives is an Islamic country and alcohol is restricted. Any alcohol brought with you will be confiscated at the airport. Alcoholic drinks will be available onboard our dhoni.
Not all group members will join the Maldives extension adventure and we'll say goodbye to some in Colombo before flying to Male.

Currency: Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR)
US Dollars are widely accepted in the Maldives and are the best currency for exchange. You will not need any local currency and it is not accepted on the dhoni boat. USD notes need to be in very good condition, without damage and writing, or they will not be accepted.

Currency: Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR)
US$ and UK£ are equally good. Importing rupees is restricted to 20,000 per person so it is best to exchange money locally.
Where to change: In most major towns.
ATMs: Yes, usually in major towns.
Card notes: Credit cards can usually be used in most large shops and restaurants. Please note that Foreign Office advice warns about the problem of credit card fraud in Sri Lanka so please consider this when deciding if to pay by card while on tour.
Credit cards accepted: Yes
Sri Lanka - A water bottle is recommended for walks and will be filled up on the bus each day.
Snorkels, masks and fins are provided on the dhonis. All equipment provided is thoroughly sanitised after each use. You are also welcome to bring your own snorkelling equipment if you prefer. Please note that fins are only available up to XXL (equivalent to UK size 13 / US size 14 / EU size 48–49). If your foot size is outside this range, please contact us before your tour to discuss your requirements and, where possible, we recommend bringing your own fins.
Bring a high factor sun protection and a hat. We recommend Factor 30 plus for snorkelling as the water intensifies the sun's strength. Swimming in a long sleeved rash vest or top that you don't mind using in the sea, is a good idea for extra protection from the sun as well as plankton that could sting. Both bath and beach towels are provided on the Dhoni. We advise you bring a water bottle for day to day use.
Ear plugs are always a good idea for travel, and light sleepers may appreciate them as the generator runs through the night.
