What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

Walking the Great Wall even at 35 degrees and 90% humidity. Cycling through the rice paddy fields at Yangshou breathtaking scenery. The vibrant markets of the muslim quarter (Xian) and Pearl market (Beijing)but be prepared for lots of haggling and persistent staff trying to sell you anything and everything. The dumpling banquet in Xian just how many dumplings can you eat in one meal! The acrobatic show in Beijing, stunning! Those overnight train journeys, say no more! Dynasty's, temples, bogoda's and tombs and then the Terracotta Army and Horses...Wow!

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Linda (Week 1) was kind and friendly and tried to join in with our sense of humour! She could snore for China which was a real problem on the train journey! But we succesfully saw all the sights with guides, trains, boats and planes all in place! Peter (Week 2) was very organised to the minute! He has a broad knowledge of all the Chinese history but his delivery is very monotone. The walks on the Great Wall were varied and sometimes dangerous we had three fallers. We ate together every evening and would have enjoyed more flexibility to seek out different restaurants.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Check the weather when you book to avoid the heat in the summer. Sun tan lotion and suitable clothing. Take currency with you exchange at M and S trying to find banks that accept travellers cheques is a non starter. Insect repellent for mosquito bites. Top quality walking boots. Tea bags, jasmine tea is an acquired taste. Take lots of energy snack bars, nuts and dried fruit to supplement lunches. Keep luggage under 15kg nearly every day you are on the move. Wide angle camera lense.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

China is incredibly diverse in it's culture, history and way of life. Be prepared for information and tourist overload at the hot tourist spots. Do not cross the roads! Do not expect high hotel standards. Breakfast is minimal so be prepared to supplement. Drink the local beer. Stick to bottled water. Vegetarian meals are impossible. Watch your wallet and valuables. Take your own food on Air China. Have a great time!!!

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

Getting up early one morning and going for a bike ride in the countryside - seeing people doing Tai Chi in the park, passing the ponds full of Lotus Flowers, finding out that monkey nuts grew in the ground...who knew?? The dumpling banquet and acrobatic show was fantastic and the Terracotta Warriors live up to all expectations.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Jack in Hong Kong was full of interesting facts and Peter who led us over the Great Wall was great fun and kept us all in line!

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Be prepared for very basic accommodation and bring along lots of very strong insect repellent...although I think Chinese mosquitoes are immune!

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

China is a vast country, full of contrasts. The China Highlights tour was amazing and every day held so many highlights that it is hard to pick a favourite. The Great Wall is truly awe inspiring with unbelievable views over every summit. The accommodation does get progressively worse as you travel off the beaten track and if I never eat Chinese food again it will be too soon.

What Was The Highlight Or Most Memorable Moment Of Your Tour

There were so many highlights on this trip, the spectacular views of the wall were incredible, the Li river cruise was amongst the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. The whole thing was amazing.

How Was Your Explore Tour Leader

Both tour leaders on the two parts were great. Oliver took us to some great local restaurants we would never have found on our own. He had great enthusiasm for ensuring we had the best holiday possible and took us on some fantastic extra trips. Peter was also fantastic, really encouraging on tough treks and took us out for great meals.

What Tips Would You Give To Someone Else Booking This Tour

Do it! China was better than I could have imagined, friendly, spectacular and very interesting. Be prepared to be busy and up early but the payoff is getting to see and do so much. Trekking poles really helped on the tough, steep walks.

Do You Have Anything Else To Add

This was a great holiday that allowed us to see and experience so much, I still can't get over all the things we did and places we went. Everything was very well organized with passionate local guides who really make a difference to the trip. Will definitely look to use Explore again in the future.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

My highlight was probably seeing The Terracotta Army. I remember reading about the discovery in the press and never dreamt I'd actually see the figures for real. The scale of the site is immense, and I really liked the fact that the excavation is still going on and you can see evidence of it .

What a vast and varied country- completely different from what we had been expecting. The types of scenery, modes of transport used, architecture viewed, colours seen, flavours tasted and sounds heard were, in many ways, a great and rewarding surprise. A photographers delight, at times almost too much to take in. Every new day was anticipated eagerly, early morning risers only on this trip. The Chinese people and particularly our local guides were always available, keen and eager to answer our questions and they were always smiling. The obvious tourist attractions were fantastic as you would expect but there were also extras not to be missed - the Beijing Opera that turned into an acrobatics show, the dumpling banquet where they come in all flavours and shapes, a tandem ride through the countryside and the peace and tranquility of a cup of tea (choose from 11 flavours) after visiting a busy highlight, the terracotta warriors. Thank you for a fabulous holiday which we shall recommend to all our friends. (HCW- 29th August 2010)
