Spotlight on West Africa

Delve into our exciting West Africa small group adventures, with special guest Phoebe Smith.

Discover West Africa

Hosted by adventurer and multi-award-winning travel writer, photographer, presenter and broadcaster Phoebe Smith and Explore's Africa Programme Manager Antony Barton, this event was focussed on West Africa. Freshly returned from Togo and Benin and Senegal and The Gambia respectively, our two presenters talked through this lesser-known region of Africa and shared their own anecdotes, provided unique insight and of course answered questions from the attendees.

You watch the event back in full below, and scroll down to find the answers to the questions that were asked.

Q&A

How safe is the food at these places. do we get veg food?
We only choose restaurants which we know have good hygiene - on the trip that I did, no one was ill and it's not an issue that comes up (unlike in other places like Egypt on occasions). Vegetarians can be catered for, but the variety will be very limited at times. Food option will be more limited in West Africa. Lunch and dinners are typically a combination of chicken or fish with vegetables in season and rice or potatoes.
What sort of food is available in Senegal?
Do I need to bring a mosquito net for my trip to Senegal?
What are the temperatures in the different countries?
For Togo — are there any specific vaccinations necessary?
Is there much hassle from people and constant begging like in India etc?
How does the voodoo festival departures differ?
What is the mobile phone/Wi-Fi signal like in Togo & Benin? Sorry, not for being tied to the internet, but more to keep in contact with my 90-year-old Mum!
Appreciate the theme of Voodoo but is it absolutely dominant in that tour?
