Small group tours to India with rail journeys

Our small group tours combine scenic train rides with unforgettable cultural experiences, from the Northern Sikh city of Amritsar to Kerala’s serene backwaters. Discover Mughal treasures, go in search of Bengal tigers and wander jungle-lined foothills as you take in the spectacular scenery of India by rail.

Explore former hill stations from the British Raj, ride narrow-gauge trains to Shimla as they wind through mountain passes and discover vibrant cities and rural corners often missed by road. Whether you’re looking for a holiday with a relaxed pace or a more active itinerary, our India rail adventures balance comfort, discovery and experienced local tour leaders to take you to the cultural heart of this incredible land.

Travelling by train gives you access to a wide range of destinations, from national parks and colonial hill towns to rural villages and major cities without internal flights or long road transfers.

A vibrant train travels across a stone bridge and enters a tunnel, surrounded by lush, green forested hills.

What to expect on a rail journey in India

Will we only travel by train?
Not exclusively. While the train is the main focus of the journey, we also use boats, taxis, buses and rickshaws. To make sure you get the most out of your experience, we choose the most appropriate mode of transport for the local area you are visiting.

What is the accommodation like?
Most of our India Rail tours feature one to three nights on an overnight sleeper train, where you can rest between cities and connect with fellow travellers. Depending on the tour you choose, other accommodation ranges from simple hotels and homestay to more luxurious accommodation. Take a look at the itinerary for your chosen stay before you travel for more information on accommodations.

What should I pack?
Pack light but smart. Lightweight, breathable clothing is suitable for most regions, though you’ll also need warm layers and waterproof jacket for winter mornings and mountain regions. A windproof jacket, warm layers (including thermals), gloves and hat are recommended during the winter and waterproofs may be useful during the wet season in October and November.

Comfortable shoes and sandals are also recommended. On our rail tours, you will be responsible for transporting your own luggage, so be sure to pack light to ensure bags are easier to carry. Also bear in mind that a soft bag is usually easier to store on sleeper trains.

How much activity is there on a rail holiday in India?
Our rail holidays in India vary in intensity. Our Moderate tours balance activity and downtime, while our Full-On tours suit travellers keen on early starts, fast-paced itineraries and more frequent travel.

What will the group be like?
Our groups usually include a mix of solo travellers and couples, often with a wide age range. You’ll likely share your journey with curious, open-minded people who love to travel in their own way. For more details about a specific departure, please contact our team who may be able to give you an idea of the group makeup.
