Rwanda, or the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’, is a small country landlocked between Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Tanzania in east-central Africa. This once war-torn country is slowly coming back on the traveller’s radar – and for good reason.

Join a small group tour to Rwanda and take in this small country’s rich biodiversity and wildlife. You’ll experience the ultimate wildlife encounter as you head out on a Rwanda Golden Monkey trek with your tour leader, where you’ll see these rare creatures swing from bamboo tree to tree in Volcano National Park.

You’ll also have the chance to learn more about Rwanda’s tumultuous history, visit a local cultural village and take in more awe-inspiring views from the top of Mount Kigali.

Highlights of Rwanda

Golden Monkeys

Easily recognisable by their tufty golden-orange colouring, Golden Monkeys are one of the best (and most unique) wildlife to see in Rwanda. They’re an endangered species with only around 4,000 left in the wild. While there’s a large troop of Golden Monkeys in Sabyinyo National Park, on our Rwanda group tour we explore Volcanoes National Park in search of Golden Monkeys.

The easiest way to seek them out is by following leftover bamboo shoots, which are discarded on the forest floor once they’ve finished eating!

Kigali

Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda, located in the central heart of the country. There’s a number of arts and cultural venues to check out while you’re here, from Kandt House Museum to Inema Arts Centre.

Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo

Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo both offer sweeping views of some of Rwanda's most impressive landscapes. The twin lakes are in the foothills of Muhabura Volcano, by Volcano National Park, and are bordered by Uganda to the south.

The lakes are surrounded by steep hills, trundling waterfalls and impressive volcanic mountains – plus you’ll spot an exciting array of birdlife, including kingfishers, African Crown Cranes and African Fish Eagles.

Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village

For a fascinating insight into local life and traditions of Rwandans, Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village is a great place to start. The village is located around the Volcanoes National Park, and after your warm welcome you’ll visit a replica of the King’s house, watch traditional Intore dances, listen to Agakenke drumming styles and listen to the ‘songs of the gorillas’.

There’s also a few hands-on experiences, from joining a Batwa pottery making class to tasting local banana beer.

Kigali Genocide Memorial

Our Rwanda adventure holiday ends in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city. The Kigali Genocide Memorial, also known as the 1994 Genocide Memorial Site,is located on the hillside of Gisozi, located just outside of Kigali.

It’s estimated that 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed Hutu forces in just 100 days in 1994. Pay a visit to this harrowing site to learn more about the Genocide, where 250,000 victims lay in rest.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Rwanda?
Rwanda has two rainy seasons: one from mid-February to May and another from mid-September to mid-December. There is also a dry season, between June to mid-September. Visiting Rwanda in the dry season has its benefits – the roads and paths are easier to navigate and there’s minimal rainfall – but visiting Rwanda during the rainy seasons provides better chances for spotting Golden Monkeys.

Rwanda has a tropical highland climate, and while temperatures vary between locations, they rarely vary month to month. Rwanda is at its hottest (30°C/86°F) in the daytime and lows of 15°C (59°F) at night during the dry season. In Kigali, the average daily temperature is 21°C (70°F).

Is it safe to travel to Rwanda right now?
Rwanda was ranked as the ninth safest county in the world by the World Economic Forum. One of the safest – and most convenient ways – to explore Rwanda is on a small group tour, where you’ll travel with a range of like-minded travellers and a dedicated tour leader.

Rwanda travel advice
While Rwanda is generally safe, it’s sensible to take precautions, such as avoiding walking alone at night and keeping valuables secure. Before you travel, make sure that you have appropriate travel insurance and vaccinations. Respect local customs and laws – ask your tour leader if you’re unsure of anything. It’s also worth noting that plastic bags are banned in Rwanda.
