Atlas Mountains Tour Highlights

Take in Berber culture at a traditional Berber village
Head into the Atlas Mountains on our Best of Morocco Tour to discover traditional Berber villages set high up in the rocky valleys. Far removed from the lively souks of Morocco’s Marrakech, these quiet ancient settlements emulate a sense of calm from a bygone era. Join a local family at their home to savour a traditional Berber lunch and learn about their distinct indigenous culture.

Discover the breathtaking Todra Gorge
The mighty amber-coloured cliffs of Todra Gorge soar into topaz-blue skies on our Highlights of Morocco Tour. We navigate our way through narrow crevices leading to a magnificent viewpoint over the rocky peaks of the Jebel Sahro mountain range as crystal-clear water trickles along the valley floor, and golden shards of bright sunlight tumble into the abyss.
Cyclist in the Atlas Mountains
Trek to the peak of Mount Toubkal
Summit the mighty Jebel Toubkal peak - North Africa’s highest point - on our Mount Toubkal Trekking Adventure. After two days of climbing along the zigzag mule paths, through the rocky valleys of the Atlas Mountains and up to the snow-dusted peaks of Toubkal, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Marrakech Plains and the Sahara Desert.

Explore the Atlas Mountains by bicycle
After a long drive up into the High Atlas Mountains to the Tizi n Federate Pass, we start cycling down towards the northern foothills on our Morocco Cycling Tour. Feel the wind rush past your face as you freewheel along dry, dusty trails, through red-rock valleys and and past lush almond groves. Meet local Berber farmers tending to their crops of barley, wheat, olives and figs and learn about their unique mountain lifestyle.

Walking the Atlas Mountains
Wander along the foothills of the Atlas Mountains on our easy-graded Morocco Walking Tour. Hike through traditional Berber villages, stop for lunch with a local family and explore rows of verdant olive groves sprawling across the valleys. Take a break to admire panoramic views over the shimmering blue waters of Lalla Takerkoust Lake and enjoy the peppery scents of juniper and pine floating in the breeze.

Family Atlas Adventures
Escape the hustle and bustle of Morocco’s imperial cities with a trip into the Atlas Mountains on our Family Atlas and Sahara Adventure. Hitch a ride on a mule to venture into the High Atlas peaks and whizz down the southern slopes by bike. Stay overnight in a traditional gite and sample delicious Berber cuisine freshly made with ingredients picked from our hosts’ kitchen garden.

Frequently asked questions about our tours to the Atlas Mountains

When is the best time to visit the Atlas Mountains?
The Atlas Mountains are a year-round destination, but the most popular times to visit are in Spring and Autumn when the temperatures are a bit lower. If you don’t mind the heat, travel from June to September to enjoy quieter roads. The Atlas Mountains weather is mostly dry, with little rainfall and clear blue skies. However, clouds of mist can roll in over higher ground and beware very cold temperatures at night, especially during the winter.

Are your trips to the Atlas Mountains suitable for solo travellers?
Yes! All of our small group tours to the Atlas Mountains are perfect for those who want to travel alone. Solo travellers make up over half of our guests, so you’ll be joining like-minded adventurers as you explore this spectacular mountainous region of Morocco. Take a look at our Guide to Solo Travel to find out more.

What should I pack for a trip to the Atlas Mountains?
Out of respect for the local culture and religion, you will need to keep yourself covered up as much as possible, so pack lots of long layers and a lightweight scarf for use in religious buildings. Bring a warm sweater for the cooler nights, especially during the winter months, and a hat to protect you from the hot sun during the day. If you’re joining our Mount Toubkal trek, you’ll need more specialist trekking kit such as sturdy walking boots and a warm and waterproof down jacket - take a look at our guide to climbing Mount Toubkal for more information.
