South Korea is full of unforgettable moments, from the buzzing streets of Seoul to serene temples. On our small group tour you'll be joined by an expert tour leader who will guide you through South Korea’s most captivating sights, sounds, and flavours. Learn to cook local food, follow mountain trails, taste your way through food markets and even practice meditation with Korean Buddhist monks.

We caught up with James, our Programme Manager for Asia. Read on to discover how he found the trip, from his top highlights to memorable moments. Plus, get an insight into the best foods to try while in South Korea and best season and places to visit.

James' Highlights

“I recently returned from the very first departure of our Discover South Korea tour. In the space of 12 days, we saw and experienced so much, but it still left me wanting to see more of this fascinating, modern and welcoming country. There’s loads of beautiful countryside, super-friendly locals and delicious food.

This South Korea tour starts from Seoul, a mega-city filled with highlights. I felt like I could have easily spent a whole extra week seeing and doing everything else on offer!

I loved the modernity and lively nighttime vibe. The National Museum of Seoul did a great job of explaining how a war-torn agrarian country with limited natural resources has transformed itself into an Asian economic powerhouse in just a few decades.

We also took a day trip to the DMZ (Demilitarised Military Zone), which provided a fascinating glimpse into the very real geopolitical tensions and the strong desire from the South Koreans for peace, reunification and to help their neighbours.

On our loop around the country, with a backdrop of great scenery, we saw a traditional mask performance in Hahoe village, hiked up Namsan Mountain and saw the impressive wealth and importance of the ancient Silla kingdom.”

Busan

Busan is a vibrant coastal city known for its beaches, seafood, and relaxed vibe. Visit Haeundae Beach, explore Gamcheon Culture Village, and enjoy fresh catches at Jagalchi Market. This colourful city offers a great mix of nature, culture, and city life.

Gyeongju

Known as 'the museum without walls', Gyeongju is rich in ancient history and culture. Here you'll discover royal tombs, Bulguksa Temple, and the ruins of the Silla Kingdom – you'll feel as if you've stepped back in time, especially after visiting Family Choi's House, which dates to the 17th century and is the oldest house in the area! This peaceful city is filled with heritage and charm.

Gwangju

Culture meets art in Gwangju. This city is known for its vibrant arts scene and modern history. Visit museums, enjoy local cuisine, and learn about Korea’s democracy movement at poignant memorial spots. It’s a cultural hub with a strong creative spirit – we visit Lee Lee Nam Studio which contains a writer's studio, Media Art Museum and coffee shop.

Jeonju

Jeonju is known for its traditional architecture, food, and arts. Stroll through the charming Hanok Village, where historic houses, teahouses, and craft shops bring Korean heritage to life. Don’t miss trying Jeonju’s famous bibimbap and local street snacks. It’s an ideal spot to experience authentic Korean tradition in a relaxed setting.

Temples, history and food

“One unexpected, slightly random and useful thing I took away from a Buddhist disciple on our visit to Golgusa Temple, was the importance of building and maintaining the strength of our big toes for balance, poise and meditative movement – not to mention also for a long and healthy life!

Busan was such a busy coastal city; stunning beaches overlooked by millionaire apartment blocks, side by side with fish markets, container shipping and a large fishing fleet.

The UN Cemetery was a poignant reminder to pay our respects to those who fell in the Korean War. Learning all about the 1980 Gwangju uprising in opposition to the attempted military coup, when Korea’s democracy was so young, was both moving and inspirational.

Koreans love their food and you can see why! It was an absolute pleasure trying regional specialties, from cooking BBQ pork at the table to a delicious chive and seafood omelette in a mountain village, washed down with fresh Makgeolli rice wine that we had just made – yum.”

What to eat and drink in South Korea

Korean BBQ

A must-try dining experience where you grill flavourful meats right at your table, enjoying them with a variety of tasty side dishes and dipping sauces. Full of delicious flavours, perfect for sharing with fellow travellers on a small group adventure.

Korean Fried Chicken

Korean Fried Chicken is more than just a tasty snack in Korea. The history began in the 1960s and 70s when Western-style fried chicken was introduced to Korea, mainly through American military influence. Koreans soon put their own spin on it by using a double-frying method and adding bold, flavourful sauces, making it stand out from typical fried chicken.

Samgyetang

This comforting ginseng chicken soup is not only delicious but also deeply rooted in Korean tradition, and it's believed to boost energy levels. Just what you need after a hard day spent exploring!

Bulgogi

Thin, savoury-sweet marinated beef is grilled to perfection and packed with flavour. It's a classic Korean dish that’s both comforting and delicious, often served with rice and tasty side dishes.

Unpasteurised makgeolli

Fresh, slightly fizzy, and full of rich, tangy flavour. It’s often made locally and served in traditional settings, giving you a more authentic taste of Korean rice wine culture. If you want to try your hand at making it, there is also a class you can take in Busan on our small group tour.

Soju

A very local rice spirit comes in different strengths and flavours. Locals submarine it into beers sometimes. Why not try it as an aperitif (you are on holiday, after all)?

K-Pop, K-Beauty and Modern Korean Culture

“One revelation was K-Beauty. Pre-trip requests from friends, family and work colleagues made me aware of this huge industry… and it turns out Korea leads the way. Even if you just want sunscreen and moisturiser you will find superb quality at excellent value, so do your research and allow plenty of space for the return flight. I suspect the reason for the luggage scales in the hotel reception in Seoul are for this very reason!

Our Tour Leader, Nikki, was there throughout to host and guide us, with tons of positive energy, sense of humour and a willingness to help.

If I had to sum up South Korea in one word, it would be super-modern. And I haven’t even mentioned K-Pop and K-Drama – all the excellent music, tv series and movies coming out of Korea add another point of interest for many. Hallyu (pronounced hal-lyu) translates to The Korean Wave – this essentially refers to South Korea’s burgeoning popular culture scene, from K-Pop (BTS, BlackPink) and cinema (Parasite) to TV series (Squid Games).”

When to visit South Korea

Summer

It does get hot and humid in summer, although Busan will be cooled by the sea breezes. July can bring rains (called "jangma"), so it's wise to pack light rain gear and breathable clothing.

Autumn is a great time to visit South Korea, with stunning fall foliage and rich cultural festivals, including the Andong Mask Dance Festival.

Winter

Winter is cold and dry, with temperatures often dipping below freezing, especially in the northern and inland regions. It does, however, offer beautiful snowy landscapes, festive lights, and great opportunities to warm up with hearty Korean food.
