1. Iconic heritage experiences

The story of the Taj Mahal, built by emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his favourite wife, is a romantic one and there is no more romantic time or light in which to see this monument of love than at sunrise or sunset. Arrive before or after the bulk of the day’s crowds, and see the Taj as it changes colour with the sun.

Another iconic experience is visiting Varanasi. This sacred city has been the centre of Hinduism for thousands of years, and one of the most immersive ways to soak up the culture is by watching an evening aarti ceremony along the River Ganges and intense rituals along the riverbank.

Finally, explore the intricate forts of palaces of Rajasthan – the state has a rich history and known as the 'Land of Kings', with striking architecture to boot. This is especially prevalent in Jaipur, the 'pink city', where you can visit the hillside Ambert Fort, well-preserved City Palace and plenty more old-world charm.

2. Spiritual culture and festivals

India's spiritual culture is deeply rooted in ancient traditions, embracing diverse philosophies and religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Every 12 years, the city of Haridwar hosts the Kumbh Mela Festival, where Hindus have travelled thousands of miles to take a ceremonial dip in the river

Visit the holy city of Pushkar, where one of the highlights is the annual Pushkar Camel Fair; it's one of Rajasthan's biggest festivals.

Explore the Indian states of Meghalaya, Assam and Nagaland to learn more about remote tribal cultures, and attend the Hornbill Festival to witness traditional dances and music, before visiting recreations of traditional homes. Check out more of the world's best festivals here.

3. Wildlife and nature adventures

There's some incredible wildlife to be seen in India, including the majestic Bengal tiger. Our India Tiger Safari is ideal for those in search of this striped Big Cat, as you explore reserves and national parks, from Bandhavgarh to Kanha. You could extend your trip to visit Ranthambore National Park, one of India's best parks for seeing tigers – here you may also spot leopards, deer and countless birdlife.

The Himalayas offers some of the most unique and diverse landscape, with tropical, subtropical, temperate and alpine landscapes. Join a walk in the surrounding forests of Rishikesh or go white-water rafting along the Ganges River here. Soak up more nature and wildlife in Rajaji National Park where you may spot wild elephant, peacock and leopards.

Bella's Indian wildlife experience:

"Travelling in a group with the knowledge of our tour leader made India less overwhelming and even more magical. All the hidden gems and learning about the culture and history really makes you appreciate this beautiful country.

I added the Ranthambore extension onto the end of my trip which really was the cherry on top! Escaping the bustling cities to the beautiful safari parks with so much wildlife was absolutely spectacular.

The highlights for me were the Bengal tigers cooling down in the streams and strolling through the trees, alongside spotting a very speedy leopard and even a sloth bear too!"

4. Active adventures and off-beat routes

For a more active take on India, hop into the saddle and bike around Kerala, encompassing the area's lush backwaters, spice routes and historic palaces, while stopping off to soak up local life in tranquil villages.

To get off the beaten track, consider our Discover Darjeeling and Bhutan tour. Starting in Kolkatta (Calcutta) you'll spot historic temples and cruise through narrow creeks to research wildlife observation points, before travelling onto the mountain-top town of Darjeeling which offers amazing views over the Himalayas. Take in some tea plantations before trying some of the best tea in the world.

5. Scenic journeys and rail experiences

Rail journeys are synonymous with travel in India, and the country is world-renowned for the scale and efficiency of its rail operations. Tour the highlights of North India travelling by train on our Kolkata to Amritsar trip. You'll tick off the greats like Agra and Delhi, before swapping to the Toy Train which ascends over 1600 metres, through 103 tunnels and some of the region's most stunning landscapes, before reaching Shimla.

6. Regional food and cultural highlights

Much of the best food in India is found outside of the city’s hotels and restaurants. Head to the streets of Mumbai to try delicious pav bhajis, a popular vegetable curry served with a bread roll. Or enjoy fresh parathas (Indian flatbreads) in Delhi’s Chandi Chowk.

When it comes to cuisine, you'll try different Indian curries depending on the region you’re visiting. Biryani in Hyderabad; hot meat curries in Rajasthan or thukpa (a noodle soup) in Ladakh. In southern India, mildly-spiced vegetarian and fish curries come fresh and wrapped in banana leaves.

For a trip with a focus on the region's cuisine, with cookery demonstrations, street food tours and visits to spice gardens, check out our dedicated India food tour.

Michelle's India foodie experience:

"What an incredible adventure my sister and I had in October! We went fully vegetarian throughout our stay, diving headfirst into authentic Indian cuisine for every meal.

The flavours were simply divine – aromatic dals, fresh naan and chapatti, creamy paneer curries, crispy samosas, and heavenly mango lassis and chai. Everything was beautifully fresh and locally sourced.

Combined with the breathtaking sights and rich history, it was pure magic. I'm already planning our return trip to explore more of this stunning place!"

7. Coastal and back-waters relaxation

While not known for its beaches, India has plenty to offer – particularly on its west coast. The best beaches in India include the palm-fringed sandy beaches of Goa and the crescents of Kovalam. Alternatively, why not add an extension to your India trip and explore the sandy stretches of Sri Lanka or the Maldives?

Stay overnight on a Keralan houseboat for a relaxed introduction to life on the backwaters. See paddy fields, village life and a myriad of birdlife from a traditional thatched houseboat as you slow down to the relaxed pace of southern India.

8. Living history and architecture

It’s impossible to travel to India without seeing some of India’s famous temples. With over two million temples in India, you’ll be stumbling over impressive monuments, whichever region you visit. Marvel at the Meenakshi Temple which stands on the banks of Madurai’s Vaigai River, or explore the four gates of Jagannath Temple in Puri.

Located in a pass in the Vindhya Hills of central India lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Ajanta Caves. The rock-cut Buddhist caves date to the second century BCE, featuring temples and monasteries home to a wealth of Buddhist art, including wall paintings that bring Buddhist stories to life with vibrant colours.

More acclaimed Buddhist caves await at the Temples of Ellora. These temples date between the 6th-8th century AD with over 30 monastic chambers and shrines recording the aspirations of Buddhism, Jainism and Brahmanism. Among the elaborate sculptures is the rock-cut masterpiece of the Kailasa Temple.

9. Emerging and hidden gems

You may think of India as a loud and busy destination, but there is another side to this diverse country. Walk in the foothills of the Himalayas and discover India's greenest city, Chandigarh, or discover southern India by foot on our Walking in Kerala tour. In India's far south state, Kerala is home to plenty of hidden gems; trek through forest and grasslands of the Western Ghats, seek out wildlife in the Periyar National Park and meet locals through the villages.

10. Seasonal activities in India

From festivals to the best times of year to visit, India is a diverse country with countless seasonal activities to choose from. April and May are the best months for wildlife spotting in India, as it's easier to see animals gather around the waterholes during this dry season.

For specific events, like the Pushkar Camel Fair and the Hornbill Festival, we run selected departure dates or trips, allowing you to visit at the right time to experience authentic and rich insights into India's diverse culture.

One of our Explore customers, Heather, wrote this captivating 'Ode to India' poem during her small group trip:

Ode to India

We met Satish, our India guide

He’s been great, we can’t deny

Inspired, taught; on him we rely

We travelled on a flying carpet

To reach the place we’re at

Some climbed a hill, some of us sat

Camels, sunset, busy market

Took care of Heather and her stick

And sat on Pat’s hat

Temples white, and we in colour

The bells, the drums, ‘Happy Hola’

‘Ladies Frisking’, Taj Mahal

Spicy, spicy, naan and dahl

Cases closely held in chains

We try dozing on our train

Rocking rhythmic, sleep in vain

Ganges, Ganges, here we are

Gathered here from very far

See your glory, see your pain

Holy gurus, make us sane

Buddha, Buddha, praise be

Please enlighten me!

Bring our bellies

Back to Delhi

Farewell new friends

Unless we meet again?

Explore we did, Explore we do

Aren’t we the lucky few!

Don't just travel, Explore!
