Our new partnership with Greening Australia: Frequently Asked Questions

We're thrilled to announce our new partnership with Greening Australia, an important part of our Climate Action Plan. Read on to find out more about why we're supporting these projects to restore our wonderful natural world, why we've chosen Greening Australia as our partner and what the partnership means.

Greening Australia's Impact

Greening Australia don’t just plant trees, they rebuild ecosystem services. By restoring Australia’s diverse landscapes, their projects rebuild biodiversity, improve water quality, sequester carbon, and support local communities and economies.

With projects spanning the breadth of the country – from city suburbs to remote rural locations – Greening Australia applies a science-led, collaborative approach to maximise impact for nature in ways that benefit communities, economies, and the environment.

Over the last year, Greening Australia have successfully planted over 3.6 million native plants and restored over 3.5 thousand hectares of habitat across Australia.

How does it mitigate damage caused by travel?

We believe that travel is a force for good, but we also acknowledge that our passion for exploring the globe has an impact on the climate and the natural world. A key element of our Climate Action Plan is recognising and taking responsibility for the footprint of our trips. Alongside our commitment to measure and reduce our carbon footprint, we are seeking to mitigate the emissions that we cannot entirely remove by investing in ways to restore and protect the natural environment.

Greening Australia are dedicated to solving complex environmental problems including climate change and biodiversity loss, through on-ground restoration at scale. By restoring Australia’s diverse and iconic ecosystems, we help create healthy, productive landscapes where people and nature can thrive.

Who is Greening Australia?

Greening Australia are a national not-for-profit committed to restoring Australia’s diverse landscapes and protecting biodiversity in ways that benefit communities, economies, and nature. They have been restoring Australia’s unique landscapes and protecting biodiversity at scale through collaborative, science-based programs for over 40 years.

Greening Australia is committed to tackling Australia’s greatest environmental challenges in ways that work for communities, economies and nature; planting millions of native trees and plants, protecting hundreds of native species, and supporting Traditional Owners’ aspirations for restoring country.

Why have you chosen Greening Australia as your partner?

We are passionate about exploring the world, yet our wanderlust never prevents us appreciating the beauty on our doorstep.  With much of Australia’s unique nature under threat and the fact that Australia has lost more mammal species to extinction than any other continent, it felt right to begin our journey to protect and restore nature close to home and we are proud to be supporting Greening Australia.

Explore Worldwide have always believed in the benefits of local. Our local leaders, the local restaurants they share with our groups, and the local communities we support as we travel.  Greening Australia’s team work with landholders and communities across Australia to create healthy, productive landscapes where people and nature can thrive.

Where are the projects you’re supporting?

Greening Australia’s restoration programs span the breadth of the country from city suburbs to remote rural locations. From the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef to the cool island ark of Tasmania, Greening Australia think big to develop practical solutions for some of Australia’s biggest environmental challenges. Explore are allowing Greening Australia to choose how to spend the funds that are donated, to ensure it is going to where the team feel it will make the most impact.

Here are the key programs currently running:

Reef Aid
To improve water quality on our Great Barrier Reef, Greening Australia are working with landholders to rebuild eroding gullies and restore vital coastal wetlands across the catchment.

Great Southern Landscapes
Greening Australia are working with thousands of landholders and partners to create and relink millions of hectares of habitat across southern Australia.

Tasmania Island Ark
Tasmania Island Ark is working with landholders to relink and restore vital habitat across the midlands to create a stronghold for some of Australia’s most critically endangered animals.

Nature in Cities
Greening Australia are working with communities, businesses and government to create greener, more liveable cities across Australia.

How is Explore supporting Greening Australia?

An initial contribution has been made, and all Australian bookings departing from 1 November 2024 will include a donation to Greening Australia. This will mean that every customer booking with Explore Worldwide will help to raise vital funds to support their work, including working towards Australia’s goal of restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030.
