Africa is a continent of extraordinary contrasts. Where else on earth can you see the Egyptian pyramids, the blue-washed city of Morocco and the Big Five (lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, and Cape buffalos) all in one place?

But for first-time visitors, Africa can certainly feel overwhelming. From safety to logistics and cultural etiquette, even the most seasoned travellers need guidance planning their first trip to the world’s oldest inhabited continent.

On our fully guided small group tours to Africa, all you need to do is choose your destination. We’ll handle the itinerary, ensuring you see the most iconic sights and the lesser-know gems, all in one spectacular journey. Below, we share everything you need to know about visiting Africa for the first time.

Where should I go in Africa for my first trip?

With 54 countries spanning more than 30 million square kilometres, there are so many places to explore in Africa. But the good news is you don’t need to see it all at once to have an unforgettable first trip.

For wildlife sightings, you can’t go wrong with safari countries Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya or South Africa. If gorilla trekking is on your list, our Uganda and Rwanda tour allows you to witness these majestic, endangered animals in their natural habitats.

In North Africa, Explore Worldwide’s Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia tours blend vibrant cities with diverse landscapes, such as the rich-red Sahara Desert. And for something completely different, our Nile adventure cruise in Egypt takes you from Cairo to Luxor, visiting ancient pyramids, temples and sphinxes.

While it can be tempting to tick off multiple countries in one go, your first trip is best spent focusing on one region. Slowing down means fewer long travel days and more time to properly experience each place, whether that’s trekking on safari, exploring a city in depth or connecting with local culture.

Is Africa safe for first-time visitors?

Yes. Africa can be a safe and rewarding destination for first-time visitors, especially when you choose tourist-friendly countries and travel with a well-planned itinerary. Booking a small group tour can make things even easier, with a local leader to guide you, handle logistics and help you get more out of each destination.

All of our trips are designed with first-time Africa travellers in mind, touring countries that offer comfort, safety and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, so you can focus on enjoying the journey.

What’s the weather like in Africa by region?

Africa follows a rhythm of dry and green (rainy) seasons. The dry season runs from June to October in South and East Africa, bringing prime safari weather with clear skies and minimal rainfall. With less water around, animals gather at rivers and waterholes, and thinner vegetation makes them easier to spot. In North Africa, including Morocco and Egypt, the dry season ranges from December to March, when temperatures are milder and better suited to exploring cities, deserts and ancient sites.

In the green season (around November to March in the south, with shorter rainy periods in East Africa), landscapes turn lush and vibrant so it’s a wonderful time for photography. It’s also calving season, so you might spot plenty of baby animals on safari. The trade-off? Wildlife can be a little harder to find, as water is more widely available and vegetation is thicker.

When is the best time to visit Africa?

The dry season is the best time to visit Africa for both wildlife encounters and city escapes. It also coincides with dramatic river crossings during the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara.

Join us on our highlights of Kenya small group tour to experience a classic African safari at this magical time of year. Spend three days traversing Maasai Mara (one of Africa's greatest wildlife reserves) in our purpose-built 4x4 Land Cruiser safari vehicles. Then sleep in a safari lodge complete with viewing decks, balconies and our very own floodlit waterhole.

What’s the best African country for a safari?

Botswana is hard to beat for a standout first safari. Explore Worldwide’s Botswana wildlife safari takes you through some of Africa’s top reserves, including Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve, with experiences like wild camping, houseboat stays (lookout for hippos and crocodiles!) and even crossing into Namibia and Zimbabwe. With remote, pristine landscapes and one of the world’s largest elephant populations, Botswana delivers a more exclusive safari for beginners.

What are the most popular flight routes from Australia to Africa?

Flights from Australia to Africa are long-haul, and most routes involve at least one stop via major international hubs. The most straightforward option is Sydney to Johannesburg in South Africa, which is one of the few direct routes and takes around 14 to 15 hours. From there, travellers connect onwards to destinations like Cape Town, Victoria Falls or safari regions in Botswana and Zimbabwe.

For other African destinations, you’ll transit through hubs such as Dubai, Doha or Singapore before continuing into places like Kenya or Tanzania. Overall, one-stop journeys are the norm and connections are generally well coordinated.

Is Africa good for solo travellers?

Yes. Africa can be a fantastic destination for solo travellers, especially if you choose well-travelled routes or join one of our small group tours. Travelling as part of a guided group makes things even easier, with transport, accommodation and activities all organised. It’s a great way to explore confidently while meeting like-minded travellers along the way.

South Africa is a standout, as Cape Town has well-developed tourism infrastructure and is easy to get around. Explore Worldwide’s guided tour along South Africa’s Garden Route takes you across cities, beaches, deserts, and forests over 12 exhilarating days. Get a view of Table Mountain from lively Cape Town, taste world-renowned wines in the Stellenbosch region and spot herds of elephants all on one adventure.

What travel jabs and medication do I need?

What you’ll need depends on where you’re travelling, so it’s worth checking in with your GP or a travel clinic well ahead of departure. Some countries require a yellow fever vaccination (particularly if you’re visiting places like Uganda) and you may be advised to take antimalarial medication in certain regions. We’d also recommend booking travel insurance before your trip.

Top tips for first-timers

Whether you’re exploring maze-like souks, wandering Algeria’s golden beaches or camping in game reserves, a little preparation goes a long way in making your first trip to Africa smooth and memorable.

  • Cover up: Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing will protect you against both sun and insect bites. And bring a scarf to wear in desert regions like the Sahara Desert.
  • Stay hydrated: Tap water isn’t always safe to drink, so carry a reusable bottle and refill from filtered or sealed sources. Or take a Water-to-Go bottle with a filtration system that eliminates over 99.9% of contaminants, Explore customers benefit from 15% using code EXPLORE15.
  • Use insect protection: Bring repellent with DEET or picaridin, especially in warmer, wetter  regions (you’ll thank us later).
  • Respect local customs: Dress modestly in rural or religious areas and always ask before taking photos of people.
  • Bring a camera (and spare batteries): Wildlife sightings and landscapes come thick and fast, and we bet you’ll want to capture them all.
