Best Places to visit in Europe in September and October

Warm days, quieter trails and Europe at a slower pace. Discover why September and October are the most rewarding months to explore.

Timing transforms a destination. The same village, coastline or mountain trail can feel entirely different depending on when you visit. In Europe, that sweet spot falls between the busy summer peak and the quieter winter months, known as shoulder season.

Running roughly September to November, shoulder season delivers what many travellers want: comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, better access to experiences and a more authentic local atmosphere. For Australians and Kiwis travelling long haul, that difference matters. If you are flying halfway around the world, you want Europe at its best, not at its busiest. That’s where small group travel, led by expert local guides, comes into its own.

Spain

In Autumn, the intense heat of southern Spain eases into warm, golden days that are ideal for active exploration. In regions like Murcia, cycling becomes a pleasure rather than a challenge. Quiet backroads wind through changing landscapes, with long lunches and relaxed evenings replacing the urgency of peak season.

Further north, walking the legendary section of the Camino Frances (French Way) in September or October brings a calmer, more reflective atmosphere. The trail crosses farmland and mediaeval villages, with cooler mornings and mild afternoons that suit those days on foot. Reaching Santiago Cathedral feels extra special when shared with your small group of like-minded travellers you walked with.

Greece

September and October are arguably Greece’s most rewarding months. On Crete, average temperatures hover around a comfortable 27°C, with minimal rain and warm evenings.

Across the Greek Islands, October brings golden light to whitewashed harbours and quiet waterfront tavernas. As you hop between iconic and unspoilt islands, you can wander through hilltop villages, pause at archaeological sites and enjoy delicious food outdoors. The sea retains its warmth, so swimming remains firmly on the agenda. Travelling with a small group allows you to experience these moments at a more relaxed pace, with time to linger where it matters.

Italy

In September and October, Italy moves into one of its best seasons for active travel with and seasonal food and wine. With breathtaking landscapes and cooler conditions, it’s ideal for a small group walking tour led by guides who know the trails. In the Dolomites, milder temperatures and clear skies create ideal conditions for walking the trails winding through dramatic peaks, alpine meadows and quiet valleys.

Further south, the Amalfi Coast becomes far more enjoyable as the summer heat fades. On a walking tour, you can explore clifftop paths at a comfortable pace, including the iconic Walk of the Gods, with sweeping views across the coastline.

Portugal & Madeira

In shoudler season, Madeira offers excellent walking conditions. This volcanic island is ready to be explored, from its unique geological formations to its breathtaking coastlines.

For travellers who like to pair scenic trails with a well-earned glass of wine, our small group walking and wine journey from Madrid to Porto delivers both. Beginning in Spain’s Ribera del Duero region and continuing into Portugal’s Douro Valley, this walking tour blends countryside hikes with generous tastings of regional wines. In early autumn, harvest season brings added atmosphere to both regions, making September and October an especially great time to visit.

France

In September and October, rural France comes into its own. Harvest season brings a strong focus on food and wine, with local restaurants showcasing regional specialities at their best. Our Taste of Southern France journey from Bordeaux to Carcassonne showcases the country at its most delicious. Sip world-class wines, enjoy regional dishes, explore medieval towns and unearth truffles with trained hounds.

Further north in the Loire Valley, châteaux-lined landscapes are framed by early autumn colour. Our expert tour leaders will take you along cycling and walking routes that wind past rivers, forests and historic estates (whilst sampling local cuisine along the way).

Malta & Gozo

September and October are some of the best times to visit Malta and Gozo. The weather remains warm, the sea is perfect for swimming, and the crowds have eased, creating ideal conditions for exploring both land and coast.

Walk scenic coastal paths, visit ancient temples and wander through historic streets in Valletta without the intensity of summer. On our Malta and Gozo Discovery tour the expert tour leader will take you seamlessly between the islands while you gain a deeper insight into Malta’s culture, history and cuisine. It’s a simple, well-paced way to experience more, without the stress of planning it all yourself.
