With close-up wildlife encounters, hands-on educational experiences and family-friendly accommodation where the kids can roam freely, Belize isn't just rich in wildlife and natural beauty, but it's also considered safe and welcoming for families.

Our Family Belize Wildlife Adventure appeals to all ages, from curious seven-year-olds to thrill-seeking teens alike.

Whether you're spotting howler monkeys in the jungle or snorkelling with stingrays, Belize is packed with unforgettable wildlife experiences. Read on as we share the top wildlife adventures that make Belize a must-visit for families:

1. Meet the world's second-loudest land mammal

Leaving Belize City behind and delving into the tropical interior, we pay a visit to the Community Baboon Sanctuary. This one-of-a-kind sanctuary gives you plenty of opportunities to see Yucatan Black Howler Monkeys – and hear them, too, as they have a very distinctive loud call. So much so, they're the second-loudest land mammal in the world!

2. Spot the tallest flying bird in the Americas

The tropical forests of the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary are a birdwatchers paradise. It's an important wetland habitat, and on our Belize wildlife small group tour you'll spend two nights at a lodge on the shores of the lagoon here. Teenagers especially will love heading out in a kayak to spot Green Iguanas, kingfisher, heron, waders and raptors, or joining a sunrise or sunset small cruise.

As the kids keep their eyes peeled for jabiru, their day will be made if they catch a sighting of this rare bird. Standing at five feet tall and with an impressive nine-feet wingspan, jabiru are the tallest flying birds in the Americas.

3. Watch iguanas in their natural habitat

In the traditional Belizean town of San Ignacio, we visit the fascinating Green Iguana Conservation Project. Learn all about these remarkable reptiles; the breeding programme is dedicated to conservation, including the reintroduction of iguanas into their natural habitat.

Watching the iguanas up close and from a safe distance makes it both educational and memorable for kids and adults alike. Better still, proceeds from the programme help fund scholarships for local children, so your visit benefits both wildlife and the community!

4. Go snorkelling at the Belize Barrier Reef

Going travelling with teenagers abroad doesn't have to be hard work – let them explore the Belize Barrier Reef for themselves. Snorkelling will give you plenty to debrief each other on, from the vibrant reef fish and sea turtles you'll see to safe encounters with nurse sharks and stingrays in Shark Ray Alley.

Groupers and snappers are larger fish species that patrol the reef, and you might spot a Moray Eel peeking out from crevices in the coral. With so much to take in, exploring the second-largest barrier reef in the world tops the list of many holiday ideas for families – especially for holidays with teenagers.

5. Be a scientist for the day

Bats are Belize's most diverse mammal group, with over 70 species recorded across the country. Take part in hands-on data collection and observation, gaining insight into the vital role these nocturnal creatures play.

During our trip, we'll visit T.R.E.E.S (Toucan Ridge and Ecology and Education Society) and stay at their eco-friendly accommodatoin, T.R.E.E.S Bunkhouse. This biology field station gives kids and teenagers the rare chance to experience real scientific work in action. Our adventure begins with a bat mist-netting session one evening – a fascinating method used to safely capture and study bats. Hands-on, immersive experiences like these make Belize one of the best places to travel with teens, as there's plenty to keep their interest – and show off to their friends about once they're back home!

6. Take a day trip to the Manatee Reserve

Caye Caulker is a laidback island with big marine adventures. From this car-free island, families can dive into some of Belize's most unforgettable marine experiences. Take a day trip to the Manatee Reserve where you can see manatee in their natural mangrove habitat. It's a peaceful, awe-inspiring experience that blends wildlife watching with environmental education.

Family adventure holidays don't come much better than exploring Belize's wildlife - far removed from anything you've experienced before.

Our Belize family travel reviews:

"This was a perfect family adventure for us. There were eleven of us, including children ages 8 to 13. The holiday exceeded our expectations. The other families on the trip were like-minded people and we all got on very well. The highlights were swimming with sharks for the children, and for me, climbing the magnificent Maya temples." - Moira

"Belize has so much to offer, and this was one of the most comprehensive and varied itineraries of any Explore Trip we have been on - ATM Cave, Jungle Waterfall, Lamanai Maya sites and Tobacco Caye snorkelling were all memorable highlights." - GrahamLeslie

"Family loved it. Snorkelled with a turtle and a manatee, sharks and rays. Climbed a pyramid. Hammock time too. Recommended!" - Trusted Customer
