2013/14 Antarctica dates released
E-mail Print

We are pleased to announce the release of the 2013/14 departures to Antarctica.

Conjuring up images of remote landscapes, icy peaks and bright white glaciers, Antarctica used to be a wildly inaccessible continent; trekking overland for days in the footsteps of the great explorers, Scott and Shackleton, was the only way in which to traverse the rugged environment. These days you can travel in the warmth and comfort of your cruise ship, with open viewing platforms you will have panoramic views of the beautiful scenery.

For a few weeks each summer, vast colonies of penguins, seals, seabirds, whales and orcas feed and spawn here. The frenzy of noise and activity is an unforgettable experience! Taking to small zodiac boats allows for great and up-close viewing.

Travelling to the Weddell Sea, and visit the emperor penguin rookery located on Snow Hill Island, where thousands of adults and chicks huddle for warmth, while others belly slide across the ice. Alternatively travel to the Ross Sea where you may encounter orcas and minke whales swimming along the ice edge.

Voyage to South Georgia in search of elephant seals, fur seals, king and macaroni penguins. Travelling to the South Shetland Islands you will encounter Adelie and chinstrap penguins, fur, leopard, Weddell and crabeater seals, and minke and humpback whales. There’s a great array of wildlife ready to be discovered all set amongst a beautiful backdrop of ice-capped mountains and crevassed glaciers

As if venturing to Antarctica isn’t exciting enough, how about taking to the open water in your very own canoe? Available as an optional extra on M/S Expedition cruises, canoeing allows for a once in a lifetime experience.

Navigate your way between ice drifts while soaking up the eerie atmosphere of creaking icebergs and groaning glaciers, only interrupted by the splashing of resident penguins or the exhale from a whale’s blow hole. These will be memories to treasure for a lifetime.
