What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

There were a lot but the one that really sticks out is being on a deserted beach on Papa Westray, the sun was shining and as we began to walk up the beach a pod of seals appeared and were playing and watching us and followed us up the beach as we walked around the headland. The other main highlight is the people that we met and discovering a part of the UK that is so beautiful and different to the places that i visited before.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

He was fantastic. His love of the islands is just so apparent. He also has great outdoor skills - teaching us how to make fire out of dry grass and sticks!

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

We were really lucky and got some fabulous weather but definitely pack your waterproofs and i wish i'd packed my swimming costume! Also speak to as many people as you can they are so welcoming and pleased to have visitors especially in Westray and Papa Westray.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

We had some super walks, varying from coastal walks watching the waves crash on to the rocks and walking through heather covered valleys on Hoy.  We saw grey seals and lots of birds, together with the numerous neolithic remains which were incredibly well preserved.

Malcolm could not have been a better leader - friendly, informative and very knowledgable and also very patient!

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Make sure you take waterproof boots and trousers, also gloves and hat!  Although the weather was wonderful we had frequent very short showers and of course it was wet underfoot in places, and windy most of the time.  This may seem obvious advice but you'd be surprised!

The trekking where all fabulous, but my favorite was the one on Papa Westray: the island is beautiful, peaceful a real paradise.

How was your Explore Tour Leader?

"The tour leader was absolutely great. He knew everything and he was able to motivate the group when people where tired or the walks seems long (all of them are actually pretty easy and we got the a fantastic weather).
He managed perfectly schedules and public transports use: we didn't have any problem."

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Bring a very good, old pair of trekking boots - new boots can be uncomfortable and prepared to be enchanted by the beauty of Orkney.

What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your tour?

Watching the seals swimming in the vortex (not sure if that is the right term) when sailing back from Hoy. However, the whole trip was magical - it was just what I needed, a relaxing, enjoyable and interesting break in a beautiful part of the country I have never been to. The weather was great (mostly), and the light made the landscapes very evocative.

Malcolm was great. Knowledgeable, passionate and enthusiastic about the islands. He knew how to pace the group and meet everyones needs. He dealt with all the issues caused by the poor organisation at Explores end with patience, and took everything in his stride.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

If you want to get away from it all, and have a relaxing break in a beautiful and quiet part of the world - then this is the trip for you. However, check the travel arrangements carefully as explore did not give me the correct information about the end time which meant I had to change my flights, costing me money. It is worth booking Friday night in Kirkwall as the trip doesn't end till 8pm, and unless you want to take the ferry to Aberdeen there is no other route home then. It is not cheap or easy getting to Orkney, and you are left on your own sorting this out. Also, check where you are booked in Kirkwall as one member of our group was booked into a hostel and had to sure with strangers.

Do you have anything else to add?

The trip itself was brilliant, but the pre and post organisation leaves a lot to be desired. Having booked lots of holidays through Exodus previously - the quality provided by explore was much worse. It was stressful and expensive having to rearrange my travel arrangements during the trip, and having to sleep on the floor of the Kirkwall-Aberdeen ferry is not my preferred form of travel.

Malcolm was excellent.  well organised, very informative and with an absolute love of the Orkneys and its history.

What tips would you give to someone else booking this tour?

Just do it.  But make sure you take a windproof top.  We had good weather but a consistent sharp, cold wind

Do you have anything else to add?

The itinerary is very well thought out to offer the best of the islands visited.  Malcolm was adept at make the most of the public transport options which allowed us maximum opportunity to see different parts of the islands

I felt a bit of a fraud booking a 'package holiday' within my own country but this was money well-spent allowing us to make the most of the time we had in these amazing isles. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can easily access some of the most wonderful scenery the Orkneys have to offer from the drama of the cliffs and the Old Man of Hoy to the empty sweeping beaches of Papay, save for the presence of a number of curious seals watching us watching them etc! Our tour leader's encyclopaedic knowledge of all things natural was an added bonus and provided another insight into life in the wilds and the presence of the Tall Ships' Race for the first weekend in Strominess was an entirely unexpected and pleasant surprise. My camera was working overtime for the whole week zooming in on everything from puffins perching on precarious sandstone ledges to the remains of the homes and tombs of our neolithic ancestors. Far from satisfying my curiosity about this remote part of the country, it has whetted my appetite and I am planning to return to explore more of the islands. ( AOR - 16th July 2011)
