Suitability

Suitability

We've given each of our tours a comfort rating and a tour pace, walking or cycling grade to give you a general idea about the level of activity on each tour and the standard of accommodation you will be staying in at the end of your day's adventure.

Often you'll stay in different styles of accommodation during your tour; so we make an average rating across the entire tour.  For more information on where you'll stay each night, please refer to the day by day tour itinerary.

Tipping

Local Crew: Although entirely voluntary, tipping is a recognized part of life in this region of the world. Some local staff will look to members of the group for personal recognition of particular services provided. In order to make things easier for you, the Tour Leaders may organise a group’s tips kitty and if this is the case, they will account for it throughout the tour.

Local Staff: Accordingly, you should allow £15.00 for tipping.

Tour Leader: At your discretion you might also consider tipping your Tour Leader in appreciation of the efficiency and service you receive.

Vaccinations & Protection

Nothing compulsory, but we recommend protection against hepatitis A, polio, tetanus, and typhoid. Tick-borne encephalitis is recommended by some medical sources if travelling in certain areas of eastern Europe, at specific times of the year. Check latest requirements with your travel clinic or doctor prior to departure.

The above is not an exhaustive list. Further information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice can be found by following the NHS and NaTHNaC links at http://www.explore.co.uk/Travelhealth/ and from your local healthcare provider.

Visa and vaccination requirements are subject to change and should be confirmed before departure.

Lone Parents

Single parents or other adults travelling alone with children should be aware that some countries require documentation confirming that the individual has authority to travel with the minor. It is crucial that you contact the relevant country embassy for further information on exactly what may be required. These details can be found on the Foreign & Commonwealth Website under the appropriate country www.fco.gov.uk/travel

Preparing for your tour

Climate

The Croatian Adriatic has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm, sunny summers. With an average of 2600 hours of sunshine per year, it is one of the sunniest and warmest coasts in Europe. There is a chance of sporadic rain in spring and autumn, though generally this is in the form of short showers. Thunderstorms occur in summer, generally helping to cool the air. Occasional high winds may make the more open waters too choppy for comfortable passage and the itinerary will need to be adapted accordingly.

Seasonal weather patterns can be unpredictable. For up-to-date information on the weather worldwide please visit www.bbc.co.uk/weather.

Packing for your tour

To assist with packing for your tour, we have detailed some of the essential items you should take with you.

Luggage

Unfortunately it does occasionally happen that luggage does not always reach its destination on the same flight as its owner, or possibly it may be damaged in transit. If you are unlucky enough for this to occur, it is important that you file a PIR (Property Irregularity Report) with the airline before leaving the airport. This is essential when you come to make a claim either against the airline or from your travel insurance company

One main piece of baggage and daypack. Maximum allowance: 44lb/20kg, but pack light as space is limited. As with all boat trips, cabin space is limited, so please pack accordingly – soft luggage is much easier to stow than a hard frame suitcase.

Trek Kit Bag

For an exclusively designed Explore Trek Bag, follow the relevant link at www.nomadtravel.co.uk/explore

Clothing

Pack for essentially ‘All Tours’ plus ‘Hot Conditions’. July and August are the hottest months, but early and late in the season go prepared with clothing to suit drops in temperature and the showers. You’ll need your swimming gear, a ‘bath’ towel and a beach towel. Light rainwear may be needed at any time of year, and a warm fleece/jacket is recommended for cooler evenings and nights.

Footwear

Trainers or light walking shoes are ideal plus sandals for relaxing. Footwear is generally not worn on board, but you may find a pair of old shoes or plastic sandals useful to avoid sea urchins on rocks.

Equipment

A water bottle, sun hat and sunscreen are all essential and you may wish to bring your own mask and snorkel. Please note that if you wish to sleep out on deck on some nights, as many choose to do in good weather, you should bring a sheet sleeping bag and a roll-mat, as the cabin bedding is not permitted on deck.

General Information

General Information

Please note: Participation in canoeing, kayaking, or rafting (including white-water) requires that you are able to swim 25 metres unaided.

While our intention is to adhere to the day-to-day route, a degree of flexibility is built into the itinerary. Overnight stops, and even islands visited, may vary due to weather and sea conditions and the availability of mooring space in harbours. An example of our typical cruise itinerary and activities follows. An ability to swim is essential for your safe enjoyment of this water-based tour.
