University of Al-Karaouine draws in those solo holidays

The Moroccan city of Fez offers many different sights and attractions to travellers on solo holidays, such as the cities ancient ruins, but people taking in the city should also remember to visit an educational establishment.

But the University of Al-Karaouine is not any old college, it is often cited as the oldest university in the world.

The establishment, where 16th-century author and explorer Leo Africanus studied, was first founded as a Madrasah (middle-eastern place of learning) in 859 AD.

As well as the interesting history, the University of Al-Karaouine is home to some fantastic architecture, including a courtyard which is beautifully and intricately tiled, which home to woodworks and paintings.

The university's minaret, from where the students were called to prayer, is one of the oldest in the region and is home to an intricate and beautiful water clock, designed by former student Abu Zaid Abderrahman Ibn Souleiman al-Lajai.
