People on
walking holidays could visit Spain or Mexico
More people may decide to take hiking holidays for the health benefits that they offer, as walking is "the best sort of exercise".
That is according to Emma Soames, editor-at-large for Saga Magazine, who said that the over-60s are taking part in walking activities more than any other form of exercise.
Ms Soams suggested some reasons for its popularity and mentioned that people of any age can do it.
"The most popular form of exercise is walking because you don't risk hurting yourself in any way. If you walk briskly, you can get your heart rate up," she said.
"A lot of people now say walking is the best sort of exercise for any generation."
Some ideal destinations for people planning hiking holidays are the Inca Trail, the final destination of which is the stunning Machu Picchu, or the Camino de Santiago (the Way of Saint James), which is an ancient pilgrimage through northern Spain.
