Jordan city of Jerash has well-preserved Greco-Roman architecture

There are many different facets to Jordan that people taking solo holidays to the country can experience.

There is the capital, Amman; a Wonder of the World in Petra and Jerash, which is an ancient Greco-Roman city that has been expertly excavated.

Jerash contains beautiful artefacts such as a circus, two large temples and a pair of very well-preserved baths.

Travel expert Christopher Leadbeater wrote about Jordan in the Daily Mail: "Jerash is magnificent, a Roman city sometimes referred to as the 'Pompeii of Asia' due to the size of the excavated area."

"But then, Jordan is littered with ancient sites, most notably the glorious Nabatean settlement of Petra, 'hidden' among rosy cliffs. Even the capital Amman has its moments – a Roman amphitheatre sits at its heart."

As well as the Greek and the Romans, many other civilisations occupied the country now known as Jordan, including the Ottomans and Byzantines.
