Brazilian city offers 'more than you can imagine'
Solo holidays to Rio de Janeiro are a great idea as the Brazilian city has been named one of the best destinations in the world by Trip Advisor.
In this year's Travellers' Choice Awards, the travel advice website ranked Rio de Janeiro as the fifth best destination in the world, and the second best in South America (just behind Machu Picchu).
Machu Picchu, the UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Peru, is positioned in third place on the list.
The citation for the award praises the city for many different regions, including its twin beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema.
"Rio offers more than you can imagine, and offers it at all hours," it reads.
"With breathtaking views from Corcovado Mountain and breathtaking deals in the city's endless malls and markets, Rio de Janeiro is a vacation paradise, whatever it is you travel for."
Other destinations placed in the top ten best destinations at the annual award ceremony were the Catalan capital Barcelona and the south-east Asian powerhouse of Hong Kong.
