The Temples were actually relocated in the 1960s with the help of UNESCO and a world-wide appeal after being threatened by submersion in the Lake Nasser with the construction of the High Dam.
Instead, they were painstakingly dismantled piece by piece and then reconstructed 60 metres above the cliff where they had once stood.
Built by Ramses II in the 13th century BC, the temples are laid out in such a way that at two very specific times of year, sunlight will flood the inner caves to illuminate the statues of four gods inside.
Those wishing to witness the so-called Sun Festival will need to visit the site on the anniversary of Ramses II's ascension (around February 22nd) or on the great Pharaoh's birthday (around October 22nd).
