City was nominated a European Capital of Culture in 2009
Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is a great solo holiday destination, as is has established itself as a major centre for the arts and festivals, evidenced by its nomination for the European Capital of Culture 2009, the country's tourism board has said.
Augusta Jaudegyte, director of the Lithuanian National Tourism Office, said: "The popularity of these events continues to grow and we expect that tourists to Lithuania will start to plan their holidays while considering the dates of the events."
This summer sees Vilnius hosting Street Musician Day. The event which began in 2008 to celebrate Vilnius becoming European Capital of Culture "erupted" all across Lithuania in the past few years and has now become an annual event, according to Ms Jaudegyte.
"Vilnius and other cities in Lithuania become one single stage for a day and people crowding the streets while enjoying international language of music, performed by various artists from the most famous to street musicians," she added.
The Lithuanian capital is also home to the Jonas Mekas Visual Arts Centre, an all-round avant garde venue for the arts.
