Budapest contains a mixture of "grandeur" and bohemian living, which makes the destination perfect for solo holidays.
Because of this, the Hungarian capital almost offers two holidays in one, according to Elaine Glusac, writing for the New York Times.
The journalist names Budapest as one of the best destinations in the world to visit, singling out 2011 as the ideal time to visit.
"From Castle Hill to Heroes' Square, Budapest is renowned for its grandeur. But in areas blighted by poverty and neglect, a surging bohemian culture revels in the wreckage at 'ruin pubs'," she wrote in the daily American newspaper.
"Originating in the scruffy old Jewish quarter downtown, these bars occupy abandoned buildings and their courtyards, hosting hipsters quaffing German and Czech beers while reclining on cast-off furniture."
The River Danube runs through the Hungarian city, which is split into two areas: Buda and Pest. Much of the city is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
