Yucatan Peninsula is 'the best reason to visit Mexico'

Travel writer recommends Chichen Itza and beaches

The Yucatan Peninsula is one of the 'best reasons to visit Mexico', according to a travel writer.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Rebecca Lefort recommended the eastern region of the Central American country as a beautiful haven.

"This is an idyllic part of Mexico, blessed with white sands, superb ruins and beautiful natural landscapes," she writes

"The jewel in this crown is Chichen Itza, the emblem of Mayan culture. It was voted one of the seven new wonders of the world and it is easy to see why it made such a list."

Writing about the area around the pyramid, she recommends visiting the 300 foot arena where the ancient Mayans played sport, the captain of the winning team would then be decapitated to be closer to the deities.

Ms Lefort also said the nearby coast is a perfect place for refuge after a day of exploring, however they are also ideal for adventure holidays: "you can try watersports, spot wildlife" on the many clear beaches.
