People who want to take a solo holiday should consider visiting the Turkish capital of Istanbul, as it offers so many different aspects.
The dynamism of the city is one of the main reasons that Pico Iyer, writing in the Guardian, suggested the destination as ideal for those planning a solo holiday.
Not only is Istanbul both in Asia and Europe, it also manages to be "both lavishly ancient and vibrantly modern", according to the writer.
"The minute I arrived in town ... I could feel the contemporary excitement that makes Istanbul one of the hottest destinations around," he wrote in the travel section of the newspaper.
"The narrow, cobblestoned streets around Ortakoy Mosque were so crowded on a Saturday evening, close to midnight, that I could hardly walk."
Mr Iyer has released many collections of essays about travel, including Cuba and the Night and Falling off the Map: Some Lonely Places of the World.
