That is according Claire Wrathall, writing in a supplement on the top 50 cultural destinations for the Sunday Telegraph, who placed the Greek capital city at number five.
Athens is also highly recommended for those on a hiking holiday: visitors can find the Parthenon's "most stunning view" by walking "about 20 minutes through woods of pine and agave" and viewing the ancient monument from the summit of Mount Lycabettus.
Visitors could head to the "architecturally arresting" Acropolis Museum for some culture, where they will find over 4,000 artefacts (including antiques), as well as contemporary art.
Athens is based is one of the world's oldest cities, with a recorded history of around 3,400 years. The Acropolis of Athens - where the Parthanon is based - is one of the cities most impressive monuments, a fact attested to by its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
