Particularly look for the local Planeta wine, says critic
Travellers on solo holidays in Sicily should look for local cuisine and drinks, according to a leading food and wine expert.
Rosalind Cooper - an experienced writer and editor specialising in wine, food and travel - has said the Italian island is one of her top recommendations when it comes to food from Italian regions.
The writer, whose latest book - The Wine Year - was released in 2010, also explained why the Mediterranean diet is so popular with British people.
"The Mediterranean diet is a seductive mix of healthy eating and romantic travel associations," Ms Cooper said.
"Why not head south to Sicily for a wonderful climate, excellent local wines - look for the Planeta name on the label - and a varied and healthy cuisine based on all the Mediterranean staples," she added.
The Wine Year is a book exploring different wines from around the world. Ms Cooper used to be associate editor of wine magazine Decanter.
