The ancient Roman settlement of Jerash is one of the "best-preserved Roman provincial towns" in the world, and is well worth a visit for people on adventure holidays.
That is according to the Jordan Tourism Board, who noted that the destination is the second most popular in the country, behind the world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra.
"A close second to Petra on the list of favourite destinations in Jordan is the ancient city of Jerash," the official promotional organisation noted on its website.
"The city's golden age came under Roman rule, during which time it was known as Gerasa, and the site is now generally acknowledged to be one of the best-preserved Roman provincial towns in the world."
As it was hidden by sand for hundreds of years, Jerash is remarkably well-preserved. While visiting the destination, travellers can visit large temples dedicated to Zeus and Artemis, as well as the town's beautiful amphitheatre.
