Inca Trail is ideal for people on hiking holidays

The Inca Trail in Peru, which leads to the historical site of Machu Picchu is "one of the most spectacluar walks" people on hiking holidays in the Americas can take, according to the country's promotional organisation.

The Peru Tourism Bereau noted on its website that the trek, which is one of few ways to get to the ancient site, is ancient in its route.

"The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is Peru's most popular trekking route and possibly one of the most spectacular walks in the Americas. It forms part of the more than 23,000 km of roads built by the Incas across South America," the organisation noted.

"The ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu is the star attraction [and] is deemed one of the world's finest examples of landscape architecture."

Machu Picchu was rediscovered by the western world a century ago, last week. The incredible ancient city was found by Yale professor - and intrepid explorer - Hiram Bingham, who worked his way through a jungle to find the area, which a local boy had told him existed.
