Drink mate in Buenos Aires to get a 'true feel' for Argentinean culture
E-mail Print

There is a 'ritual' to drinking the bitter tea

Britons planning to visit the Argentinean capital on a solo holiday must try one of the city's most famous drinks, according to Lonely Planet.

Heather Carswell, who is a spokeswoman for the travel guide company, noted that one of Buenos Aries' most popular drinks is mate (pronounced 'ma-tee'), a bitter tea which is loved by the locals.

"[People] probably already know that Buenos Aires is the home of tango and cheap, fantastic steaks, but [they] might not know about one of its most popular drinks, mate," she noted.

"Preparing mate is a ritual in itself and there is an informal etiquette to drinking it."

This ritual means that the drinking of the tea in the Argentinean capital is one of the ways to get a "true feel" for the culture of the country.

According to the 2011 edition of the UNWTO Tourism Highlights, Argentina recorded the biggest jump of arrival figures in South America in 2010, at 23 per cent.
