Country is ideal for those on adventure holidays
People planning adventure holidays to Central America in order explore the former lands of the Mayans may feel spoilt for choice.
While many will take a trip to Mexico's (admittedly breath-taking) sites, right next door to it is a country which offers a similar experience, with the added bonus of fewer people being there.
Guatemala is an "impressive" destination for those who enjoy adventure holidays, according to travel author Kevin Rushby, as some of the sites are among the best in the region.
"Given such significance and all the impressive remains of pyramids and palaces, you might also expect a glut of tourists, but you would be wrong," he wrote in the Guardian.
"Our little group is alone … a single caretaker guard tells us that he sees fewer than a hundred people a year - and most of those are local schoolchildren."
Any list of the must-visit sites for adventure holiday travellers in Guatemala must include Tikal, where people can see an ancient 47-metre pyramid and the varied birdlife.
