Of all the places I’ve been to Burma is the one that stands out. I had an amazing experience exploring a country that I’d wanted to get to for so long, during the 15 years of tourism boycott. Burma offers fabulous scenery, a variety of destinations and sites, and the wonderful, smiling and welcoming people who are genuinely pleased to see you. Highlights for me were the opportunities to walk through local villages and see people going about their everyday lives, and the peace and tranquility of the temples at Bagan at sunrise.

Next on my list (Foreign Office travel advice allowing…) is Pakistan. I want to see the spectacular scenery of the Karakorum Mountains and the meadows of wild flowers in the spring. Having read The Great Game by Peter Hopkirk, about the struggle for power in this region back in the 19th century, to me the region encapsulates the pioneering spirit of adventure travel.
